There’s no doubt that the caliber of Major League Baseball’s best players is unmatched anywhere in the world. And it’s not only because of the size, physical abilities, and power that make the difference in who’s the best. It’s because of the chemistry and the work ethic that they have put in over the years. There are a lot of great players who come from the American League, the Eastern Conference, or the Central. But there are only a few who are truly world-class.
This year’s most decorated player, Korean baseball player Hyun-jin Ryu, is up for the Olympic gold medal. The 27-year-old won the bronze medal in his first Olympic game, playing for South Korea against Japan. He batted cleanup for his country during the tournament and impressed even his own manager. He has some big-time talents, but his real ceiling is as a designated hitter.
One player who’s been getting a lot of attention for his play this year is Korean pitcher Jung Jin-ho. The South Korean struck out 17 in his only appearance of the World Series, throwing a no-hitter. Not all of his appearances have been meaningful, but he did strike out eight against the Texas Rangers in the Series, allowing only one run to score. Whether he can continue to perform like that and win the gold medal, is an enigma for those Americans who’ve seen him develop.
Mike Mussina is another man on track for greatness. The Dominican Republic native made his major league debut this season, throwing very little during his rehab start with the Yankees. If he can continue to pitch like he has been doing, the best-known Dominican Republic talent will likely be heading to the majors next year. Mussina is one of baseball’s best young talents, and he has the makings of a long, successful career.
Finally, we have the Dominican Republic’s own Alex Rodriguez. The American ace has dazzled us this season, leading the AL in runs, assists, and total strikes. While many are expecting another epic performance in the World Series, it would be tough for any team to overpower the New York Yankees given their depth.
So who’s the best player?
That answer will come down to which team you think is going to go far in the playoffs. It would be interesting to see how this team fares against the other powerhouse teams in the playoffs. Some may say that Rodriguez and Co. have the inside track, with Evan Longoria and rookie catcher Miguel Olivo also providing great play. I’m not so sure either, but these are the factors that we’ll be weighing for our team.
Now that we’ve defined the parameters on who the world’s best baseball player is, it’s time to analyze the argument. And while many will argue that Rodriguez is the best player in the world, others will say that Longoria or someone else is better. Whichever team you decide to root for, there’s no doubt that you’ll be having a great time in this year’s World Series.
The players listed above are the best of the best. While there are a number of talented players in the minors who can contend for the title, none stands above the rest at this point. It will be an exciting World Series for both teams and many will be hoping that they break through and win the World Series. For now, however, only the best player in the world remains.
This is the question every baseball player hopes they never have to answer. Does he or she live up to the hype that they’ve created? Many have been proven over the years to do just that. Just ask Joe DiMaggio. Even after leaving the game, he continued to dazzle with the world’s best-ever baseball player.
Now it’s your turn to make your claim as the world’s best baseball player. Are you up to the challenge? Will you be able to live up to the expectations that so many around you have created for yourself? Only you can answer that question.
Remember, this isn’t a popularity contest. It’s about being the best that you can be. You can show everyone what you can do. Just go out there and prove it.
